news story from a city - a reflection

i am writing this news from a city with my heart more than itch. It took me a few weeks to some sort of regain my balance after i read it in a local newspapers and street news, it was not about cancer disease news - it was about a university undergrad committed suicide in a local hypermarket by using the knife in that premise to stab at himself!!!
My first question was: WHY?
My second question was: IS OUR YOUTH TODAY AS STRESSFUL AS WORKING ADULTS?
My third and many questions?????? - among them - are our parents insisting their children 'must', 'have to' become lawyers, doctors etc., and viewing these professions as the only ones which give financial security to life? - i do not know.
This is another tragic category of human life, besides natural disaster, epidemic/pandemic etc.

Comparing to this news:

This is time for reflections about the meanings of life & death besides economic & social issues.

Healing my aching heart

After nearly a week 'mind boggling' & heart aching after reading the email accounts of the 'virtual' friend, i felt may be healing my aching heart is looking for some related literature on lung cancer, including holistic medicine/CAM/integrative medicine and sent for references - hopefully could serve to help the 'virtual' friend.
i searched from 'scholarly research' databases, and found some research reports literatures both in Chinese and English. I am not sure these 'scentific' information's readability to end receiver.

Profile title

After some 'contemplation', so i decided to 'soften' my profile title to avoid conflict with possible local cultural meaning (perceptions) of illness experience. The initial heading of 'research on malaysian with cancer experience' may be perceived in opposite direction of positive lights, even though it is an information research study intended for 'advancing knowledge and research' (quoted a buddy researcher's word).

Further contemplation on illness trauma

After note: the below personal experience is a diary of my personal reflexivity, it does not represent "Evidence-based" scientific account or resource for point of reference medically, neither from my friend nor the references cited...
March 6, 2011, 0840hrs. "He who speaks does not know, He who knows does not speak - Lao Zi 老子)
added entry after a dreaming nite...
*********************************

As i am still very concerned with the question of 'how to deal with illness trauma' such as an experience of diagnosis of cancer? I felt itch in my heart for days every time i heard of someone known or unknown is challenging with this human cells changes & growth uncontrolled within...uncertainty is not easy to cope...much less i like to ask a psychologist to clear this philosophical thought (may be unless is FOC - it may not be appreciated either) ...

In retrospective, my conversations Q & A with a very kind, intelligent good friend who did personal research on cancer diseases of conventional medicines & alternative medicines, Dr Martin Dunn (a scientist) way back in 1995 - at that time i "perceived" he was of the opinion that the human physical body has its natural immunity, the question is how are we going to boost our immunity within (or regain our natural immunity system?)? Far back, he recommended Holistic Medicine, and also he recommended to read this book (reviewed at Amazon.com as "best selling ground breaking classic", viewed March 5, 2011) :

Anatomy of an illness as perceived by the patient /Norman Cousins, Bantam, 1991.

I read then that year, and was very inspired by the author's innovative courage to 'walked' the healing path, thus the author's name stay in my mind till today...
May all 'sensitive groups' walked the journey of recovery more innovative than this humorous man and inspired others just like him in their individual way...

Quote & unquote - psychosomatics taboo?

A reflecxive note:
Lately i was contemplating on studies employing 'sensitive group' at my local cultural setting. It leads me to explore some literature regarding illness trauma & emotion in different discipline studies : Healthcare (including psychology), Communication, LIS etc.

Schroevers & Teo (2008) conducted a study with 113 respondents of Malaysian cancer patients usinga brief COPE Symptom Check List. In the concluding report, the researchers suggested that posttraumatic growth is not only a Western phenomenon, the findings of their respondents showed similar trends as well as in its correlates as their Western counterparts (p.1239). On the other hand, It is interesting to note as early as in the late 1980s, it was observed a growing researchers from several disciplines were investigating why talking or writing about emotional uphealvals can influence mental and physical health in the western culture (Pannebaker, 1995), the researcher summarized "within western culture, the disclosure of traumatic and emotional experiences can promote physical and psychological health" (p.8).
In addition, it has been found many of the Internet resources of health, illness & wellness (in English) in the WWW includes the social aspects of therapies - support groups, real-time chat facilities, personal inspirational story sharing in healing journey, blogs etc. - augment of the Web 2.0 technologies features.
my question: But how many studies have conducted the disclosure communities of chronic disease in Asian countries? - probably this may be a good bibliometric studies topic.

Lately i read an article in Health & Beauty Magazine, Malaysia "Living with HIV / AIDS" (December 2010, p.32). i was very amzaed by the courage of the interviewee who disclosed herself and shared her thoughts and experience 'publicly' in this topic regarded 'taboo' by the writer - which i do agree in local cultural setting which can be perceived 'personal sensitive information'. From the article, i figured out that the courage of the interviewee has many supportive factors, one of them is living with the reality of "HIV positive status" does not become the "centre of her identity", observed the writer.

Long ago a good friend who is a computer scientist told me that he did not put all his eggs in one basket, probably this is another analogy to describe how to deal with or prevent life experience being traumatic?
